Overview

WAX 242 is an F1 hybrid wax gourd in Zinbioseed's vegetable seed range. As an F1 hybrid it grows vigorously and uniformly, giving an even, dependable crop.

Wax gourd — bí đao — is cooked in soups and stir-fries and made into the popular chilled bí đao drink. Mature fruit develops a waxy coating that lets it keep for months, so growers can store it and sell when prices are good.

Growing guide

  1. BedsMake raised, well-drained beds, work in well-rotted manure (and lime on acidic soils) and lay plastic mulch to keep weeds down and moisture in.
  2. SowingSoak the seed for 4–6 hours, then sow 1–2 seeds per hole about 2 cm deep, or raise seedlings in trays and transplant them at the first true leaf.
  3. SupportGrow the vines on the ground over mulch, or on a sturdy trellis for cleaner, straighter fruit.
  4. Feed and waterWater evenly and side-dress little and often once flowering starts, with extra potassium while the fruit fills.
  5. HarvestCut young fruit at market size, or leave it to mature until the skin develops a waxy white bloom for long storage.
