Overview

Ruby 39 is an F1 hybrid watermelon in Zinbioseed's vegetable seed range. As an F1 hybrid it grows vigorously and uniformly, giving an even, dependable crop.

Watermelon is one of the most important fresh fruits of the tropics, eaten all year and in huge volumes during festive seasons. Growers look for hybrids that set fruit reliably, size evenly and travel well to market.

Key features

  • Crisp, sweet flesh for fresh fruit markets
  • Short season: harvest about two to two-and-a-half months after sowing
  • F1 hybrid vigour: strong, uniform plants and consistent produce

Growing guide

  1. BedsMake raised, well-drained beds, work in well-rotted manure (and lime on acidic soils) and lay plastic mulch to keep weeds down and moisture in.
  2. SowingSoak the seed for a few hours, germinate it in trays and transplant at the first true leaf, or sow straight into the mulch holes.
  3. Vine careTrain the vines in one direction, remove surplus side shoots and keep one or two fruits per plant, set at the second or third female flower.
  4. Water and feedWater regularly until the fruit reaches full size, with plenty of potassium, then water less in the last 7–10 days to raise sweetness and prevent cracking.
  5. HarvestHarvest when the tendril beside the fruit has dried, the ground spot has turned creamy yellow and the fruit sounds hollow when tapped.
